The Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) has opened emergency loan applications for members and pensioners affected by Typhoon Kristine (international name: Trami) in the Philippines. Following extensive damage in Albay and Naga City, the GSIS program is immediately accessible in these areas and will be extended to other regions declared under a state of calamity by the government.
The emergency loan program aims to assist government employees and retirees in addressing urgent financial needs caused by Kristine’s impact. GSIS President and General Manager Wick Veloso encouraged eligible applicants to utilize the GSIS Touch mobile app for a secure and seamless application process, allowing faster access to the necessary funds.
Eligibility and Loan Details
The GSIS emergency loan provides a financial lifeline to eligible government employees and retirees in calamity-stricken regions. Active GSIS members who meet specific criteria can apply for the loan if they have paid at least six months of premiums, are not on leave without pay, and maintain a minimum net take-home pay of PHP5,000. Additionally, retirees must retain at least 25% of their net pension after loan amortization to qualify.
Members without a previous emergency loan can apply for up to PHP20,000, while those with an outstanding loan balance may borrow up to PHP40,000. The loan carries a 6% interest rate per year and is payable within three years. The GSIS clarified that loan proceeds are intended to assist with urgent recovery and rehabilitation expenses for affected families.
GSIS Touch Mobile App: A Convenient Tool for Applicants
GSIS recommends using its mobile application, GSIS Touch, which simplifies loan applications and improves the overall experience for members and pensioners. Veloso highlighted the app’s features, which allow users to apply for loans, monitor premium payments, check insurance contributions, and access membership and pension information from their smartphones.
For those unfamiliar with the GSIS Touch app or needing assistance with its use, customer support is available 24/7. Members and pensioners can reach the GSIS Contact Center at the following numbers: 8847-4747 for Metro Manila, 1-800-8-847-4747 for Globe and TM users, and 1-800-10-847-4747 for Smart, Sun, and TNT subscribers.
Areas Under Monitoring for Calamity Declarations
In addition to Albay and Naga City, the GSIS is monitoring multiple areas across the Philippines impacted by Typhoon Kristine for potential state-of-calamity declarations. Regions like Bicol, CALABARZON, MIMAROPA, and parts of Central and Eastern Visayas experienced significant flooding and property damage, while widespread power outages and infrastructure issues have complicated recovery efforts.
The GSIS has assured the public that it will activate the emergency loan program for members in any additional areas designated under a state of calamity. This financial aid seeks to offer prompt assistance to government employees and pensioners in rebuilding their homes and securing essential resources.
Contact Information and Additional Assistance
For members seeking more information on the emergency loan and other services, GSIS has several options available. The GSIS website (www.gsis.gov.ph) offers comprehensive guidance on loans and benefits, while the GSIS Facebook page (@GSIS.PH) provides timely updates. Additionally, members can reach out via email at gsiscares@gsis.gov.ph or contact local branch offices listed on the GSIS website for personalized assistance.
